EMI Responds: 'Preservation of Abbey Road a Priority'...

EMI owner Terra Firma is seeking different partnerships and options for preserving Abbey Road Studios, according to a statement issued Sunday. The company was decidedly vague on whether a sale, partnership, or other option would result, though the company was clear that the heritage of the fabled studio would be preserved. "In response to recent press speculation, EMI confirms that it is holding preliminary discussions for the revitalization of Abbey Road with interested and appropriate third parties," a representative emailed Digital Music News.

The company noted that a serious offer was considered in mid-2009 (for a sizable sum), though it was rejected because of a desire to keep ownership over the property. "In mid-2009, we did receive an offer to buy Abbey Road for in excess of £30 million [$46.4 million] but this was rejected since we believe that Abbey Road should remain in EMI's ownership," the company continued.

Several months later, Terra could be entertaining an outright sale, especially given the seriousness of the financing situation surrounding EMI. Since late last year, the company indicated that discussions with potential partners have involved injecting capital into the studio, and preserving its heritage. "At all times, these plans have focused on providing access to artists and, where possible members of the public," the company noted.

The statement follows mounting pressure to preserve the studio from various corners, and expressed interest from Andrew Lloyd Webber.
